As many of you know, I’m the creator of the Cards Theme for I thought I would share a little bit of history about me and why I decided to create a theme in the first place.

Around 2001, I got my first job in IT working as the sole helpdesk employee at a remote office. It was a piece of cake, so much so that I had nothing to do most of the day. So, I started dabbling in web design and development to keep me busy.

My first sites were garbage. Eventually, I created a website for a customer that allowed people to sell their Koi fish to others across the country. I custom-built an auction component into the site, similar to what you would see on eBay. Yes, this was to sell fish! There was a photo gallery, auction, buy now, and other crazy features. I thought this was extreme, but then I later created another site that did the same for carrier pigeons. It’s crazy what people do for a living.

Anyway, a few years later, I got more into development, .NET programming, and eventually SharePoint Development. Long story short, today I’m a software architect and work with Microsoft Platforms like SharePoint, Power Apps, and Azure.

During this time, I always had something driving me towards web design, although I actually do less and less design over the years.

After about a year using, I started tweaking the default themes, trying to make them look a bit different.

I then realized I could, with relatively low effort, create my own theme and even publish it to the plugin directory. So, I did! That was back around November 2022.

Today, I continue to maintain the Cards Theme. I enjoy getting into the code and making tweaks. The other aspect I enjoy is sharing the theme with others. I receive feedback and issues, and it’s a lot of fun.

What’s next for the Cards Theme? I’m continuing to refine the theme, and make it as simple and light as possible. Ideally, it would be configurable enough that it can be useful for more people. I’ve also seen what fellow theme developer Matt, has done with Tiny Theme 2.0 and find it a very interesting approach.

I’ve considered creating other themes, not only for but perhaps for other platforms as well, like Bear, Blot, etc. Perhaps even Ghost. I may play with this idea and see where it goes. I don’t want to lose the joy of the creation process.
